Commissioned by the The Indonesian Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology
and debuting as part of the Kiranamaya, the video mapping section of Indonesia Bertutur 2024,
KALI is a tale of rivers in the land.
KALI is a tale of rivers in time.
The audio-visual piece sits in abstract conversation with two layers of Indonesian heritage, the metaphorical rivers of wax, dye and creativity that flow within the story of Batik; and the literal rivers, waterways and canals that sit at the heart of the centuries long work of ecological co-existence and communal sustenance that is Subak.
Through the lens of abstract generative geometries and ambient soundscapes, KALI seeks to peer within these rivers and paint something of their essence in light and colour and music.
To gesture at the multitude rivers flow into a people.
And the multitude of rivers that flow from that people into the world.
